For the young that lived before the'50 we have to consider there was the Second World War, so, many boys had to fight in the conflict so they hadn't free time. In general, we discover that in this period they share their spare time with family and friends, never with boy/girlfriends. If the interviewees were only children or/and they went to school in this period of their life. They would have more time to spend with friends. In general boys prefer to practice sports while girls like better read.
