JOHN CALVIN

John Calvin, co-founder of Protestantism, was born in France 26 years after Luther.

Of Catholic extraction, he studied theology, philosophy and law, using a humanistic method, at the University of Paris, Orléans and Bourges, and he converted to the Reformation in 1533, after a nature reflection.

His work, " Istitutio Christianae Religions", published at first in Latin and then in French in 1541, was an absolute, revolution because it brought the protestant faith to a vast audience and it was diffused to the whole Europe.

Twice, his work had been condemned to be burned on the churchyard of Paris Cathedral.

To escape to arrest, Calvin took refuge in Strasburg, then in Ferrara, in Basilea and finally, in 1536, in Ginevra. He died on 27th May 1564. As he wanted , no funeral monument indicates his tomb.

The bases of his doctrine were: the double PREDESTINATION; the determining function of God’s Grace; the Bible as the only authority on faith and moral; the reduction of the Sacraments to Baptism and Eucharistic Dinner.
