The name Nero, used
today to mention the evil soul of a certain person, refers to a ruler
who belonged to Giulio Claudia's dinasty.
Nero (not his original name, but an adoptional one), was born in 37 A.C. He began to rule after Claudio's death (he ruled between 41-54 A.C.) at the age of seventeen, thanks to the mother Agrippina (who was Caligola's sister and Claudio's fourth wife). Nero revealed already in childhood artistic tendencies. He was guided by the advice of his mother, the philosopher Seneca and also the prefect of magisterial Afranio Burro. The first five years were happy ones, but unfortunately Nero was crazy. He preferred to entertain his subjects organizing shows himself rather than ruling. He also used to organize poetric competitions. They also say that he used human torces. He was a terrible murderer: he killed his wives, his mother, Burro, Seneca and other people. In 64 he was charged to home ordered the big fire of Rome, but he accused the Christians, promoting their persecution. After his soldier's noting, Nero killed himself in 68 with a friend's help. It's said that in his final moment he cried: " What an artist dies with me ! " |
